The State of Emergency in St. John’s has been extended until at least the end of the day. In fact, Mayor Danny Breen says it will not be lifted in time for church on Sunday.

Officials provided an update on storm efforts today, as they discussed the next course of action as the province and municipalities deal with a record-breaking storm that dropped over 70 centimetres of snow over eastern Newfoundland.
Permission has been extended to allow the city to dump snow in St. John’s Harbour, as much of the downtown is buried in snow.

Mayor Danny Breen says only emergency vehicles are permitted on the roads—police, ambulance, and fire crews.
Private plow contractors and taxis will not be permitted for the time being.

Dr. Brian Metcalfe of Eastern Health says they instituted a new system of triage in light of the state of emergency as it relates to calls for paramedics. He urges people to consider other options if suitable as some roads are impassable.
He urges people to consider the NL Healthline and the Mental Health Crisis Line.
Mayor Breen indicates the capital city will seek extra resources from outside sources.
