Bell Island has lost its main accommodations facility and with it, a historic building.
An inferno quickly consumed the former St. Edward’s Convent last night shortly after power was restored to the island. Pictures show that volunteer firefighters had no chance to save the wooden structure.
Mayor Gary Gosine says conditions were difficult as it was bitterly cold.
He says it’s a major loss to the community. The mayor hopes the owner will rebuild as accommodations will be a big thing this year.
