Two young people who have been deemed “unsung heroes” in Conception Bay South have started a helpful trend in the community.
Mayor Terry French says the young duo with the last name Fagan, took it upon themselves to go from fire hydrant to fire hydrant shoveling them out, and it started a trend.
French says now they’ve seen a number of residents take up the cause and shovel out the hydrants in their neighbourhoods. He says with so much snow, at many locations you can just see the red stick coming out of the ground.
With some 1,300 hydrants in the Town, French says it will take time to get to them all, and any help makes a difference.
There have been two major structure fires in CBS in the last two weeks, and with hydrants clear, French says it saves considerable time, and even lives.
He thanks those who have taken the time to help.
French encourages everyone to help out if you can as it can make a significant difference.
Fire Department Appreciates Assistance

The St. John’s Regional Fire Department is encouraging residents who are able to help with clearing out fire hydrants to do so.
Deputy Chief Rick Mackey says if residents are able to clear away a fire hydrant the help is appreciated, but his team is prepared if it is not.
Mapping services have provided them with the locations of all fire hydrants, and city workers have been able to quickly clear away any hydrants that are needed.
However, every second counts in an emergency so if residents are able to it does help out the fire department.
