Vice President Atlantic with the Insurance Bureau of Canada says there are several steps to take when dealing with insurance claims after events like the recent storm.
Amanda Dean recommends taking photos, making lists of damaged items and gathering proof of purchases are all beneficial steps and will help speed up the claim process.
One thing Dean says they’re highly suggesting people do is to remove snow from their roofs, decks and windows, if it is safe to do so.
She says damage from melting snow or ice would not be covered so it’s important to check with your insurance representative to ensure what is and isn’t covered.
Meanwhile, Dean also offered a few tips for protecting homes from flooding in light of the rainfall expected on Monday.
The main method for prevention, she says, is continuing to remove snow from doorways and windows.
She also recommends keeping an eye on the storm drains outside your home. If they’re clogged, that could mean sewer backups in your area and you’ll want to call your insurance to see if you have coverage.
