City workers, first responders and others who put in long hours and worked during the historic snow storm last week were celebrated with a special free dinner yesterday.
Workers piled in to the Royal Canadian Legion on Blackmarsh Road yesterday for a free plate of jigs dinner and even some desert.
Members of the military were invited as well, but were unable to attend.
Legion President Greg Grenning says the entire event was planned in short order. They contacted Dominion late on Thursday to help with the food and were able to put the whole thing off by Sunday afternoon.
By the midway point of the afternoon they had already served over 250 meals.
Grenning says the event was very well received. Everyone was so appreciative of the meal, and everyone at the legion is so appreciative of the effort of all the workers. Grenning calls it a great way to pay it forward.
Constable Michael Carter was one of the first responders at yesterday’s event. He says by working through the storm he learned a lot about the camaraderie of his team.
They were all out there at the same time and battling the same challenges. He notes it feels like they were a part of history and that is something to be proud of.
