A warning following last week’s heavy snowfall that ponds still aren’t safe for those venturing out on snowmobile.
A retired Deputy Fire Chief with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department and member of the Rovers Ground Search and Rescue Team tweeted out on the weekend about the conditions at Great Pond in Torbay.
Despite a thick and heavy snowfall, Jack Hickey says there is no ice cover on the pond, putting snowmobilers and others who venture out in jeopardy.
This is Great Pond, Torbay an hour ago. About 100' from shore there is ZERO ice under the snow. Skidoos have passed over this hole, oblivious to the fact there is no ice under. My shovel went down about six feet in water. Please be safe if you are Snow Shoeing or on a Skidoo. pic.twitter.com/Rfkf39ho8L

Torbay mayor Craig Scott says while the snow has resulted in great snowmobile conditions, people need to be cautious.
Many might think that the ponds are frozen over, but that may not be the case. He urges people to check the ice before venturing out.
