The Nunatsiavut Government is advising beneficiaries that the hunting ban on the George River caribou herd remains in effect.

The Nunatsiavut Government agreed as a member of the Ungava Peninsula Caribou Aboriginal Round Table, to discourage beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement from hunting the caribou from the herd while the ban remains in place.

Natural Resources Minister Greg Flowers says the George River caribou are in a critical state and any harvesting now will significantly impact the recovery of the animals that so so culturally important to Labrador Inuit.

Flowers is calling on other Indigenous groups in Labrador to do the same and encourage members to adhere to the ban.
