A second person in Toronto has tested positive for the new coronavirus, but health officials say the overall risk to Canadians is low.
Ontario health officials have identified the person as the wife of the man who has been in quarantine in a Toronto hospital since flying home from China.
Chinese health authorities report the virus has infected over 4,500 people and killed 107 as of this morning. They say the number of known cases of the virus increased by nearly 60 per cent overnight.
Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, the province’s Chief Medical Officer says unless you have travelled to Wuhan or parts of China there’s no need to worry.
However, she says the province is prepared.
Dr. Fitzgerald says her department has been in regular contact with federal and regional partners. She says regional health authorities are preparing for possible cases by looking at supplies, reviewing protocols and plans.
Dr. Fitzgerald says if you have travelled to Wuhan or China and have symptoms such as fever, cough or worsening cough, difficulty breathing and shortness of breath, call ahead and let health authorities know you’ve had this potential exposure so they can take the proper precautions and be prepared.
