The town of Carbonear is keeping a close eye on the situation after receiving multiple complaints about a lag in garbage collection.

Some residents say they haven’t had their garbage picked up in over a month and Christine Power is one of them.

She says the garbage piled up outside her house is starting to attract rats, and she took to Facebook seeking answers. She immediately started receiving messages indicating that others were in the same boat.

Mayor Frank Butt says the town is very concerned. The municipality contracted garbage collection to Eastern Waste Management years ago to allow municipal staff to concentrate on other matters.

Starting in 2020, Eastern Waster Management subcontracted garbage collection to a private company, which is when the problems began.

Mayor Butt says the town is committed to picking up any garbage that is not collected today, and is keeping a close eye on garbage collection services provided by the sub-contractor moving forward.
