A former principal of Leary’s Brook Junior High is clearing the air after reports of a situation at the school over the past week.
Assistant Director of Programs for the Avalon region within the NLESD Darryl Feener says some of the reports have been unfortunately misleading.
Police were informed of students at the school, allegedly carrying knives, and threats being made towards teachers last week. Feener says officers approached staff to investigate on Tuesday.

Feener states that a student had a letter opener that was mistaken for a knife. It was confiscated. A pocket knife was also found, but its discovery was unrelated. The pocket knife was also taken from the student.
Both administration and the RNC did not identify a legitimate threat to teachers or students, nor a danger to the community. There will be no charges laid, and Feener says the investigation is complete.
Any time there is a chance of a threat, Feener says they cooperate with the RNC or RCMP, but that work takes time. He says they want to ensure the integrity of all students and staff, and safety is their top priority.
Since the investigation, they have had extra supervision on duty at the school and resources available for students and staff.
