A 70-year-old St. Philip’s man is facing charges after the seizure of contraband tobacco from a cube van in Gander.
Police stopped the van on the Trans-Canada Highway last Thursday as part of an ongoing investigation.
Over 7,600 cartons of contraband tobacco and cash were seized from the van. The driver, Robert Kennedy, was arrested and charged under the Federal Excise Act.
He’s been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Gander provincial court on May 12.
RCMP say one carton of contraband tobacco typically sells for between $40 and $50—putting the total street value of the tobacco seized at over $300,000.
