There were no injuries following a fire that broke out around suppertime at an apartment complex in Grand Falls Windsor.
The fire seriously damaged one apartment, and displaced all residents of building 6B at Terrace Apartments.
Amelia Richard was home when the fire broke out. After alerting some of the other residents, she grabbed her cat kennel, but could only find one of her cats. She spent time searching for the second animal until the police came.
When she said she couldn’t leave her cat the police asked her if the cat was worth her life. It was then that he grabbed her and got her out.
Eventually Richard’s boyfriend, Chris, arrived on the scene and, despite being told not to, ran into the building to find the feline.
Richard says a first responder stuck around to help her boyfriend find the cat. Her boyfriend told the first responder to leave and that he would “jump off the balcony” if he had too, but wasn’t leaving until the cat was found.
Luckily, this story has a happy ending.
Richard says the cat was found and, other than some smoke inhalation, all are unscathed following the ordeal.
Meanwhile, several tenants were displaced following the Judges Terrace fire.
Crews contained most of the fire to the second-storey of the 12-apartment building, but caused smoke and water damage to adjacent apartment units.
The Canadian Red Cross have helped two men and a woman from three apartments with emergency housing, food and clothing.
Six other tenants made their own arrangements for places to stay pending cleanup and repairs.
There were no injuries.
