A brand new drop-in space to help students learn through creation and the use of technology was officially opened this morning by Brilliant Labs.
The Avalon Maker Space is located at the English School District’s Conference Centre at 40 Strawberry Marsh Road in St. John’s.
Provincial co-ordinator with Brilliant Labs, John Barron explains the concept.
It’s an area where students and teachers can come together to make whatever they want, he says. It includes all kinds of tools including micro-controllers, robots, 3-D printers, laser and vinyl cutters and sewing machines.
The Makerspace will be open to students two days a week. Barron says it’s all about learning by doing.
They have a sign above their door that says “Failure is an Option” because, he tells VOCM News, you learn more from your failures than from your successes. It teaches students ways to trouble shoot, which is an essential skill for employers.
