Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro says it has resolved a billing issue brought to their attention earlier this week affecting customers on the coast of Labrador.
Torngat Mountains MHA Lela Evans met with Natural Resources Minister Siobhan Coady earlier this week to discuss power bills that have doubled, and even tripled in some cases.
Evans says the issue affected coastal communities that rely on diesel generation.
NL Hydro today apologized for the error in customer billing and they are in the process of re-issuing corrected bills to customers.
Hydro says customers in Labrador isolated diesel communities have a rate structure whereby the first block energy rate is charged at a lower rate, with electricity use beyond that charged at progressively higher rates.
Delayed meter readings resulted in some electricity bills being estimated too low, and additional energy usage was inappropriately charged in the higher rate blocks.
