The Premier Sports Academy, an indoor training centre – the first of its kind in the province – officially opens its doors in Paradise tomorrow.
The facility will offer young baseball players an opportunity to beef up their skills and improve their game.
Ryan Sweeney owns the facility, and Noah Anderson is the operations manager. The two invited Trevor Nyp of the Los Angeles Angels along for the grand opening.
Sweeney and his family moved to Ontario when he was 15 because there were no facilities here at home that allowed him and his brother to pursue baseball. At that young age he and his brother were exposed to the type of facilities that simply didn’t exist in Newfoundland. When he returned home, he was determined to set up a similar facility which he says is desperately needed.
The 15,000 square foot facility includes batting cages, a field and all the necessary equipment.
Noah Anderson says they’ve received great support, and demand is high.
Trevor Nyp, a Kitchener Ontario native, opened Playball Academy five years ago and caught the attention of the Los Angeles Angels. He says having such a facility at home means a lot for young athletes.
“The sky’s the limit” says Nyp, and he believes there’s no reason why we can’t expect to see Newfoundlanders in professional baseball some day.
