Hundreds gathered this morning to remember the 84 crew members who lost their lives when the Ocean Ranger sank in 1982.
Gonzaga High School held the 38th Annual Ocean Ranger Prayer Service at St. Pius X Church. Five members of the crew were Gonzaga alumni.
Amanda Craig helped organized the service. She says we do better as a province when we come together.
Craig believes people draw strength from each other during the service. She is happy to offer a space to grieve, share stories, and remember the lives of loved ones together.
The church fell silent as the list of 84 names were read aloud, and candles were lit in their honour. Family members came to the front to collect red flowers to honour their loved ones.
Samantha Gerbeau was there to remember her father, Guy Gerbeau. She was 11 years old when the Ocean Ranger went down and she says it’s a day she will never forget.
She says she remembers her father for being a strong man and a hero. She says he was full of life, and only 36 years old when he died.
