RCMP are warning the public to remain vigilant after a woman was tricked out of $350 in a scam shared on Facebook.
Police in Port aux Basques say the woman received a link from a Facebook friend with an offer of employment. It turns out that the message came from a cloned account that appeared to be her friend, but was actually a scammer.
They asked the woman to complete a written application and purchase $350 in gift cards that would be reimbursed with her first pay cheque.
The woman followed the instructions, providing access codes and other information the scammer requested—including a passport picture, her Facebook password and bank account numbers.
The scammer is now using the victim’s Facebook account to scam others.
The RCMP says scammers may be very convincing and friendly when targeting your personal information. If something feels wrong, do not engage.
