The recent outbreak of the coronavirus has been sparked racism at Memorial University’s St. John’s campus, despite the low risk in Canada, according to the school.
Earlier this week MUN President Gary Kachanoski expressed concern that some members of the university community had been singled out and felt ostracized and mistreated by others. He says racism and xenophobia will not be tolerated on Memorial campuses.
Kachanoski says that students should stick to the facts about the virus and refrain from making assumptions and judgments.
He explains that the most important thing of all is that all students and staff treat others with respect and kindness.
A Memorial University student named Emma Troake wrote an article for the Gazette speaking about the importance of assessing critical situations by being armed with facts.
