Two former politicians agree, public life can be very rewarding, but it comes with a price.
Ryan Cleary is a former NDP MP and Keith Hutchings is a former PC cabinet minister.
Cleary says most politicians can expect public criticism for unpopular decisions or policies, but social media has taken that to another level. He likens it to being in school. Years ago before social media and cell phones, if you were bullied in school, you got a reprieve when you went home – now there’s no relief.
As a politician, Cleary says, if you make a mistake or say something wrong, you have to be prepared for what he calls “an avalanche.”
Hutchings agrees, but it’s not just the politician who is affected.
He calls social media a great tool with which to engage with the public, but there is a darker, more sinister side. He says that aspect of the job can also be very hard on your family.
