There is no cap on spending limits or the need to disclose donations in the Liberal leadership race once again.
Party president John Allan says the party’s current laws do not provide the parameters to enforce or monitor spending caps during a leadership election.
They welcome the recommendations that will be coming forth from the All Party Committee on Democratic Reform that was put in place last year.
The party can change its rules and regulations around leadership elections at it pleases, but committee member John Samms says that’s something that should happen at a party convention.
Samms says that way, members are present and motions can be put on the floor, fully debated and vetted. He says in this circumstance, decisions have to be made quickly. He indicates that the process in 2013 worked, and that is what they’re largely moving forward with—the lone exception being the time frame.
Allan says at the next AGM they plan to have the party’s constitution re-written and modernized.

Candidates do not have to disclose where their money or donations come from, and Allan says they are asking that candidates consider being open about it.
Allan reiterated much of what Samms had to say. Allan says a lot of these rules would go forth to the Annual General Meeting for members to listen to and vote on.
The leadership review came upon them quickly says Allan, leaving the party only a few days to pull it all together.
The Party President says at the next AGM, following the leadership convention, they plan to have their constitution modernized and re-written from top to bottom, with many of these issues included.
Crosbie Lobs Back After Liberal Announcement
The Leader of the Official Opposition didn’t hold back when sharing his thoughts on the Liberal Leadership process announced earlier today.
Ches Crosbie says the Liberal Party has put the province’s premiership “up for auction” by putting no limits on the amount of money someone can spend, or limits on where money can come from.
Crosbie says bags of cash can be delivered by way of suitcase or in brown paper bags as there are no stipulations or reporting requirement on where money comes from. He claims that the public will never know whether favours were purchased and granted.
Crosbie slammed the Liberals saying the fact they could even contemplate doing what he calls a “free-for-all” is an outrage to the people.
He says the Liberals are so steep in corruption, that they don’t even understand that the public find the regulations to be unacceptable.
