A number of businesses in centre city St. John’s were evacuated late Friday afternoon after the top of a cell tower collapsed, landing on a commercial building.
The structure on Blackmarsh Road houses several businesses, including Campbell’s Rent-Alls and St. Pat’s Bowling Lanes.
The base of the cell tower remains standing, however the antenna portion toppled over, slamming into the building before coming to rest propped up against its roof.
It is currently unknown what caused the incident. The tower—which stood at about 30 metres tall—is listed as a Bell transceiver.
The extent of damages is currently unknown. However, the roof of the building, and some windows sustained major damage.
No injuries have been reported.
Meanwhile, in a statement to VOCM News Bell Aliant says they are working with the tower manufacturer to determine the cause of the incident.
Cell service was not impacted in the area.
