A former MP, who made political history for turning the tide on a long-time Tory stronghold, has passed away.
Former Liberal MP Jean Payne defeated Loyola Hearn in the riding of St. John’s West in the 1993 federal election. She held the seat until 1997.
St. John’s West was a long-time Tory stronghold. It was previously held by MP John Crosbie, who stepped down in October of 1993 after representing the riding for close to 20 years. He passed away in January.
Payne passed away on Wednesday. She was 80 years old. The funeral will take place from Holy Trinity Church in Ferryland on Saturday, March 7 at 11 a.m.
