The Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation says Canopy Growth is “full steam ahead” with operations in Newfoundland and Labrador.
On Thursday, Canopy Growth announced 500 layoffs connected to the closure of its growth facilities in Aldergrove, and Delta BC. It is also halting plans for a third greenhouse to be established in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario.
Minister Bernard Davis and PC Lloyd Parrot went back and forth over the issue during Thursday’s Question Period.
Parrott asked what discussions the Minister had with Canopy Growth on operations in the province and what assurances he can provide job seekers.
Davis says no grants, loans or direct investment have come from government to a growth agency with respect to cannabis. He says he spoke to Canopy’s management and they assured him they’re going ahead with the $90-million facility on White Hill Road.
Davis says the facility is set to open in the spring and it will employ some 140 plus people.
He says a job fair is coming in April and he looks forward to being here to cut the ribbon at the facility in his own district.
