The local chair of the Canadian Federation of Students is touring the west coast to talk to students about consent culture.
Bailey Howard says Newfoundland and Labrador remains one of four provinces in Canada without legislation mandating stand-alone sexual violence policies at post-secondary institutions.
She says this province is in a unique position to challenge campus sexual violence by mandating that MUN and the College of the North Atlantic establish strong, stand-alone, survivor-centered policies and promote consent education.
The Canadian Federation of Students has sent a letter to the provincial government, signed by all five student unions, calling for elected members to pass legislation that mandates all post-secondary institutions to establish stand alone sexual assault policies.
Howard says CFS is also asking for government to establish a mechanism of data collection and accountability.
