Marine Atlantic has started the first phase of its ‘Pandemic Plan’ for COVID-19 as concerns grow over the spread of the virus.
While the Public Health Agency of Canada says the risk to Canadians remains low, Marine Atlantic updated their plan based on changes associated with the coronavirus.
Spokesperson Darrell Mercer says they’re taking a staged approach as the virus moves through Canada. Currently, they are in the “pre-pandemic” stage.
They have implemented increased cleaning measures, which are typically brought in this time of year to combat influenza. The strategy involves using a stronger, deeper cleaning chemical, which is used on all bathrooms and public surfaces.

Mercer says they don’t want to alarm anyone. If they have to move onto additional stages, they will provide customers with information in the increased measures as they are implemented.
He indicates that Marine Atlantic is in constant contact with health authorities, and encourages passengers to practice good hygiene—including washing your hands for at least 20 seconds, and to avoid touching your face.
He notes while there hasn’t been much of an impact on business yet, a few tour groups for the summer have cancelled.
