The province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, says the first presumptive case of COVID-19 in the province is in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region, but she couldn’t say much more about it.
Labrador-Grenfell Health covers the Labrador region and the St. Anthony area.
When asked if the case was on the island or in Labrador, Dr. Fitzgerald wouldn’t say due to confidentiality reasons, but reports that they are conducting contact tracing.
Dr. Fitzgerald says the investigation is ongoing and anyone travelling with the individual will be contacted by public health and examined for symptoms. If they have symptoms, she says they will be tested.
There are recommendations for contact tracing on planes. Fitzgerald says generally speaking, testing is done on people within a two-meter radius, if they were symptomatic when travelling.
Dr. Fitzgerald says the woman with the presumptive case had returned from a Caribbean cruise and has been in isolation since testing was completed.
She says as far as she knows, the person had mild symptoms while travelling, and the contact tracing process is ongoing.
Dr. Fitzgerald indicates there will be updates as warranted.
