Big changes have been announced for provincial ferries.
Transport Canada is loosening the rules which require people to leave their vehicles on a ferry. Passengers are now allowed to remain in their vehicles during crossings.
That’s not hard and fast as the captain of each boat still has the last word. They can require passengers to vacate their vehicles prior to departure due to weather conditions and the potential for unsafe travelling conditions.
Crews are also required to maintain additional space between vehicles to allow for easier evacuation of passengers. That may mean fewer vehicles aboard a ferry.
Provincial ferries all have additional cleaners, sanitizers and soap, and have been directed to increase their cleaning schedule between and during crossings, as well as in the evening.
