As if the COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t enough to worry about.
RCMP and the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre are warning of scams making the rounds that are preying on people’s fears.
Fraudsters are targeting victims by posing as cleaning or heating companies offering to clean your house or workplace for a fee. Some are posing as the US Centre for Disease Control or the World Health Organization, and even Public Health Canada telling people that they’ve tested positive for the virus. They then trick their victim into giving up health card or credit card information for a prescription.
Other scams include fraudsters posing as the Canadian Red Cross seeking a donation, coronavirus-themed phishing emails, and financial advisers pressuring people to invest in stocks related to the disease.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is warning people to be suspicious of unsolicited calls or emails related to COVID-19 or the coronavirus and if you are uncertain, don’t respond, hang up, and contact the anti-fraud centre.
Remember; trusted sources for information include the Provincial Covid-19 website, the Public Health Agency of Canada and the World Health Organization.
