At the end of regular visiting hours today, long-term care homes across the province will be closed to all visitors.
The announcement comes shortly after NAPE issued a release calling on government to do just that. The directive will be reviewed on a regular basis.
Government says the decision was not made lightly, and the action is being taken to protect elderly residents, and those with weakened immune systems or underlying medical conditions—who are at a higher risk of developing complications from COVID-19.
The provincial government says visits provide important social connections and improvements to quality of life for many residents and families. They understand that some may feel frustration, sadness or even anger in light of this change.
Government says during this global pandemic, the health and wellness of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians is priority.
