Premier Dwight Ball says some contractors are already implemented measures to adapt to the new rules and regulations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ball says Occupational Health and Safety inspectors are on site and visiting them regularly to ensure contractors are compliant.
He claims if they’re not being compliant, they will make the decisions that are required to protect workers.
The executive director of TradesNL, Darin King, raised concerns as work continues at construction sites like MUN’s Core Science Building.
The provincial government has been driving home the importance of social distancing and self-isolation, but King says government has offered no direction to the construction industry.
Ball says provisions around equipment and personal hygiene is the work of Occupational Health and Safety.
He says it’s important to remember that in some cases, work would continue.
The Premier says work can continue for those contractors that are able to put in the appropriate measures required to ensure the workplace is safe.
