Program Manager of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Newfoundland and Labrador says the isolation measures in place for COVID-19 make it particularly tough on people living with metal health and addiction issues.
Heidi Edgar says the difficulty with the current situation is it creates an interruption or uncertainty for those receiving treatment. She points to those getting daily methadone treatment as a specific example.
Edgar says some clients in recovery are being told they must attend the local pharmacy every day which can heighten anxiety.
She says people aren’t able to cope in traditional ways now that social distancing and isolation have been recommended by public health officials
Edgar says, sometimes having a cup of tea for an anxious person is a coping mechanism. She says making connections with others is a huge part of treatment for people with mental health and addiction concerns.
