The RNC says overall, it’s been met with “overwhelming support” after a woman was arrested in Corner Brook this week after refusing to comply with requirements to self-isolate.
The 53-year-old woman had returned from a trip outside the province 48 hours previously, but was still out and about.
RNC, following up on reports received, located the woman on Tuesday and confirmed she had recently returned from travel. When they impressed on her the importance of self-isolation, they were met with what they call “non-compliance.”
Repeated attempts to get her to co-operate were unsuccessful and the woman, who was not showing symptoms of illness, was placed under arrest. She’s been charged with failure to comply with special measures under the Public Health Protection and Promotion Act.
Police say actions that put the community’s health and safety at risk will not be tolerated.
Premier Introduces Penalties for Non-Compliance
On Wednesday, Premier Dwight Ball slapped down more penalties for those who are not complying with self-isolation regulations.
Previously, government said you could be issued fines or even face short jail time for non-compliance.
Now, Ball says they can immediately take away your driver’s licence.
He says they will explore every opportunity they have to put these measures in place under the current legislation.
