The annual snow crab fishery appears to be heading for a delay, but the Association of Seafood Producers says its members are committed to working together with government and harvesters to ensure a safe fishery this year.
Derek Butler of the ASP says while the season will be delayed, that does not mean the entire season needs to be “thrown away.”
He says it’s about taking the time required to ensure the industry has adapted to the new reality and remains “a healthy and reliable part of the supply chain.”
Butler says they’ve spoken with the FFAW, Minister Gerry Byrne and other producers outside the province who are all committed to putting in place the necessary protocols and procedures to adapt to the new reality.
Fisheries Minister Wants Fishing Season Delayed
Fisheries Minister Gerry Byrne is calling on the federal government to delay opening fishing seasons due to COVID-19.
Byrne says the main concern he is hearing from workers in the field is that of safety.
Byrne says that until measures can be put in place to ensure working conditions are safe for fishermen and plant workers throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, fishing seasons must be delayed.
Byrne spoke with federal Fisheries Minister Bernadette Jordan about a fisheries support program to provide funding to increase safety measures like providing personal protective equipment.
Byrne is hoping the federal government will also address how income supports for fishery workers will work in conjunction with EI support which they avail of during off-seasons.
