While students have been sent home for what could be the rest of the year, many schools are staying connected.
In CBS, pupils from St. George’s Elementary have really latched on to the Green Heart Program. Principal Paul Edwards asked the students to use green paper to design hearts with special messages and to post them in their windows.
Edwards says it was wonderful to see messages like stay safe, stay strong and we miss you. He says, “it’s a bright spot actually because we don’t want our children to come through this with all doom and gloom.”
With all that’s happening with the Covid-19 pandemic, Edwards says it’s hard to not feel down. Because schools were abruptly closed and may not reopen this year, he says it was tough to say goodbye.
“It was an emotional time,” Edwards told The VOCM Morning Show.
“Especially for our grade six students who came to collect their belongings in a small plastic bag and we couldn’t even reach out and given them that one last hug – it was sad.”
And that’s why Edwards and other staff members wanted to incorporate the school colour – green – and those special messages to maintain that relationship with students.
As for the heart-shaped cut-outs, Edwards says, “it’s giving them a little bit of hope and excitement that their friends are ok as well.”
Edwards says the school hopes to keep that connection alive over the coming months with similar activities.
