The English School District’s Board of Directors met virtually over the weekend and voted to permanently close three schools in the province—with one major caveat.
Charlottetown Primary will close at the end of the current school year, while Green Bay South Academy in Roberts Arm and Brian Peckford Primary in Triton will close when an extension is completed on Dorset Collegiate.
Other schools that were under consideration will remain open for the time being. They include Marystown Central High, Stephenville High, Phoenix Academy in Carmanville, and St. Mary’s Elementary in St. John’s.
Board Chair Goronwy Price says public consultation is vital in the final determination, and that has been much more challenging at this unusual time.
Because they couldn’t conclude the process and get full collaboration on what is in the best interest of students, they decided not to make a final decision on some of the schools at this time.
Director of the English School District Tony Stack says the transition of the three remaining students at Charlottetown Primary to Glovertown Academy this September should be relatively smooth.
