Although there is nothing that replaces careful handwashing, using hand sanitizer, not touching your face and physical distancing, some also feel safer wearing a face mask.
A local tailor has been creating fashionable face masks to prevent people from touching their faces.
Dave Mullett and Shara King of Midnight Tailors say with their peak season shut down because of the current health crisis, they wanted to do something to supplement their income while helping others.
Mullett says since they already had the skills do it, they worked on a design and created a mask that would help others.
The pair was amazed by the generosity of others. They say that some people have paid for their own, but also paid extra so that someone in need can get a mask, too.
The masks are reversible with a solid colour on one side and a design on the other. King says they have a filter in between the two fabrics as an additional line of defense. The masks are not medically approved.
Masks Alone Will Not Prevent Spread: Dr. Teresa Tam
The Chief Public Health Officer of Canada, Dr. Teresa Tam, says while some people may use masks to help reduce their chances of spreading COVID-19, there are a number of important things to keep in mind.
Tam says it’s important to consider both the type of mask and your circumstances, to ensure safe use.
For example, she states that medical masks must be conserved for use by healthcare workers, or those providing direct care to COVID-19 patients.
On the other hand, non-medical masks—such as homemade face masks—may be useful for preventing yourself from touching your face, or to maintain cough etiquette. However, it’s important to ensure the mask is well-fitted, and Dr. Tam states you must practice good hygiene before, during, and after wearing the mask.

Remember that you can also become infected if the virus enters the mucus membranes of your eyes. Do NOT touch or rub your eyes, especially after touching your face mask that could be contaminated with the virus. #COVID19

Dr. Tam says a mask alone will not prevent the spread of COVID-19. Proper hygiene, and following public health measures remain the best way to stay safe.
