The completion date of the multi-million dollar Muskrat Falls project is up in the air thanks to COVID-19.
On March 13, Nalcor declared force majeure affecting GE’s grid and power contracts. All construction activity at the Muskrat Falls site in Labrador was suspended on March 17, and the Soldier’s Pond site was put into maintenance mode as of last weekend.
Nalcor provided an update on the project to the Public Utilities Board last week, outlining the impact concerns over COVID-19 has had on operations. That included details on LIL software development and testing at GE Grid’s facility in the UK. Meanwhile, Nalcor was trying to work through vibration issues observed in the three synchronous condenser units at Soldier’s Pond.
Work on the three synchronous condensers has since been suspended. As a result, Nalcor says, it is unable to provide a reliable schedule for the Labrador Island Link or the generation project.
