The world is already seeing the impact of a halt in most heavy traffic and industrial activity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Residents of the Punjab in India have been taking to social media with pictures of blue skies and a clear view of the Himalayas, something that reportedly hasn’t been seen in the region in decades due to heavy smog.

Local environmentalist and member of Decarbonize NL, Brett Favarro says smog levels have improved in some heavily-industrialized and urbanized parts of the world because of measures to contain the spread of COVID-19.
He says in some places air pollution as disappeared overnight, and satellite data collection is showing levels of nitrogen dioxide over big cities has reduced significantly.
Favarro says by removing the technologies that produce air pollution, we’re getting a taste of what the world could look like if we weren’t so dependent on them.
