New information has been revealed about the number of casualties following the submarine attacks off Bell Island in 1942.
While researching for a new online museum exhibit on the World War II attacks by two German submarines at Bell Island, it was discovered that five sailors aboard the ore ship, Rose Castle, survived. This means 65 sailors were lost, not 70.
The new virtual exhibit, being created by the Shipwreck Preservation Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, is in partnership with the No. 2 Mine Tour and Museum on Bell Island. It will tell stories of the attacks, the sinking and the response by the residents of Bell Island.
It includes underwater photos and video along with stories from locals and researchers.
