The province’s Senior Advocate joined today’s COVID-19 update.
With half of the country’s COVID-19 deaths linked to long-term care facilities, Dr. Suzanne Brake offered her assurance and support to families of those living in long-term care homes.
She emphasized the importance of maintaining social distancing at a very difficult time.
She understands that families are distraught and in anguish, especially if their loved one is living with dementia and doesn’t understand why their family has suddenly disappeared.
She advises that families must rely on staff to arrange electronic means to keep in contact or arrange meetings through closed windows and doors.
Chief Public Health Officer Offers Caution
Long-term care homes represent half of all the country’s deaths due to COVID-19.
Canada’s chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam provided the latest numbers today.
There are 29,826 confirmed cases of the virus across the country and 1,048 deaths.
Dr. Tam warned today that Canada’s homeless also represent a vulnerable population and without immediate action, there will be more outbreaks and what she calls “avoidable deaths.”
