A 61-year-old hunter from Nain is being treated for injuries after he was reported missing this week.
The man, who was hunting with a group near Okak Bay, was reported missing Tuesday afternoon after he failed to show up at a designated rendezvous arranged when the group split up.
The man’s hunting party stayed in the area and searched through the night and into the next day, but to no avail.
Nain Ground Search and Rescue and Fire and Emergency Services were contacted by RCMP along with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.
An aerial search was launched Wednesday morning and the man was eventually found by Nain Ground Search and Rescue with the aid of a Universal helicopter.
The man suffered injuries after driving his snowmachine over an overhang. He was transported to hospital for treatment.
RCMP Caution Snowmobile Riders After Rash of Incidents
The incident is the latest involving overdue snowmobilers in the province in recent days.
Last Friday three snowmobilers were reported overdue after heading on a trip to Grand Lake in central Newfoundland. The trio, who cited a miscommunication in the confusion, came out of the woods just as a search team was heading in.
VOCM News also reported earlier this week that a young woman from Rigolet, Labrador was found safe and sound after she was reported overdue on Sunday. She spent a night in a local warm shelter that she reached after walking a considerable distance when her machine got bogged down. She was was otherwise none-the-worse for her experience
RCMP are asking people who venture out on snowmachine to keep safety top of mind, especially when venturing into isolated areas.
