The leader of the province’s NDP is calling on the provincial government to provide better supports and protections for workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
NDP Leader Alison Coffin says the health crisis has shone a light on the need for enhanced worker protections.
She claims that because of the pandemic, the province now realizes that “front-line worker” includes many low paid workers.
Coffin says changes need to be made to the Labour Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety Act in areas including guaranteed paid sick leave and paid emergency leave days for all workers, elimination of doctor’s notes, better overtime pay and workers’ compensation coverage for all workers who become sick due to COVID-19.
She explains that it is important for all workers to have access to these things.
The NDP wants seven paid sick days and 14 days paid emergency leave guaranteed for every worker.
