The relaxation of public health measures is still a ways away, although planning is underway.
However, the Chief Medical Officer of Health reminds people that we are not out of the woods yet.
The province has recorded no new cases of COVID-19 over the last five-straight days, and no more than five new cases in one day over the last two weeks.
Dr. Janice Fitzgerald hopes that people understand that lifting public health measures is something that needs to be done very carefully, slowly, and thoughtfully.
She says people have proven themselves up until now that they can follow public health guidelines, and that must continue.
Dr. Fitzgerald knows it’s been difficult for people to do what’s been asked of them, and she appreciates it. She is confident that people understand the importance of following the guidelines in place, and she has great faith people will continue to do so.
The Chief Medical Officer says we must still be careful. Just because people are not presenting positive through testing, does not mean the virus is not circulating in the community.
Regulations Around Weddings, Funerals Still Up in the Air: Haggie
Making plans for later in 2020 is still up in the air.
When asked if large functions like weddings or funerals could go ahead as planned for later in the year, Minister Haggie says that question is a moving target.
He says that there is potential optimism but there is also so much uncertainty about the way the virus will behave in a global nature.
Haggie explains that until there is a vaccine and more information about the virus, it is impossible to “look into a crystal ball and get a clear picture.”
