The provincial government says they have the capacity to protect those dealing with domestic violence amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
RNC say they know that efforts to self-isolate and contain the virus are advantageous for abusers and they are actively working to detect intimate partner violence in the community. They encourage anyone who suspects violence to call 9-1-1.
However, Premier Dwight Ball says they will continue to monitor the capacity they have. This doesn’t just include the healthcare system, it also includes spaces in transition houses and hotels, if the situation were to become stressed.
He says added to that, it’s important people know support lines are in place, so that when or if people find themselves in a violent situation, they can reach out in a safe format.
Ball says his Premier’s Youth Council had some innovative ideas around texting rather than just call lines during a meeting late last week.
The Premier says they’re working closely with different community groups and associations.
Right now, Balls says they have the capacity in the system, and excess capacity they’ve identified in the community should people find themselves in vulnerable situations.
