An illegal fire on the southern Avalon near the Town of Portugal Cove South, which had to be fought by a waterbomber, is being investigated by forestry officials.
The department responsible for forestry says the fire has been contained but is still being monitored. It’s believed that the fire was caused by someone illegally burning garbage on Saturday in high winds. It got out of control and burned about eight hectares.
The forest fire season for the island is in effect until September 30, and permits to burn grass, brush or other materials are not being issued at this time.
Penalties for violations can range from a summary offence ticket to a fine of not less than $500 or three months imprisonment.
In Labrador, the forest fire season is scheduled to start June 1 subject to weather conditions and wildlife risks.
