City parks in St. John’s remain closed due to COVID-19, but as the provincial government is now reviewing ways to relax restrictions, city parks may be the first on the list to reopen.
That’s from St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen, who says the decision to reopen parks and playgrounds will be made based on health directives.
Breen says as parks reopen, residents may only be permitted to walk through the areas, and walking directions may be put in place like those seen on the Quidi Vidi Lake Trail to promote social distancing.
The city has received some complaints of non-compliance in public parks, but Mayor Breen says that’s not unexpected. He says it is difficult to completely shut down parks such as Bowring Park and Bannerman Park as they cover large areas and have multiple entry points.
Breen says, in general, most residents are complying with public health orders, and he says the low number of cases over the last number of days is a good indication of that.
