The Newfoundland and Labrador Health Minister says they are working with public health on what they should do to tighten travel restrictions further because of concerns about tourists going iceberg hunting in the province.
Minister John Haggie says the definition of what is essential travel has not been addressed in a regulatory order due to the complexity, but he doesn’t argue that the restrictions need tightening.
Haggie says they’re trying to come up with something that makes sense, yet isn’t overly prohibitive. He says the assumption was that people who were coming to the province were going to play by the rules, but some have not and that’s a matter for law enforcement agencies.
Marine Atlantic, a federal Crown corporation, has to follow federal rules. Haggie says they don’t have any direction for specific exclusions and will let people on the boat if they bought a ticket.
Haggie had a blunt message for anyone trying to enter the province for vacation purposes during the pandemic: “If you come from away, you best stay away.”
