Cars and trucks in St. John’s are going to have to move out of the way for cyclists, joggers and walkers.
St. John’s City Council voted 8-2 in favour of changing street networks to make walking and biking safer during the COVID-19 pandemic
A 30-day pilot project will see some city sidewalks extend into either a parking space or one lane of traffic, and divided into two lanes using candlestick pylons.
City Councillor Sandy Hickman says phase one of the project will include four streets: Elizabeth Avenue East, Parade Street, Newtown Road and Harbour Drive.
Hickman says the purpose is to give pedestrians space to pass each other in both directions, and to allow bicycles to move around safely on the roadways.
More streets will be considered after the 30-day project is complete.
