Fred Hutton, who struck up a live three-way conversation with Ryan Cleary of FISH-NL and Keith Sullivan of the FFAW at the height of the dispute between the two fish unions wins after FISH-NL barged in on an FFAW meeting, wins gold in the breaking news category.
VOCM At Noon, our flagship half-hour lunchtime news package anchored by Brian Madore, wins gold for best radio newscast. The top story that day was a wild situation on Allandale Road when a sinkhole opened up, sending a vehicle with mom and children aboard airborne.
It took three of our reporters to cover a massive fire at Hotel Mount Pearl, which smouldered for days and sent potentially toxic smoke drifting over the west end of metro. Earl Noble was on the scene for many hours with help from Victoria Battcock and web editor Tyler Dunne. The story wins silver for breaking news in the digital category.
