Health Minister John Haggie is sharing some concerns around the May 24th weekend that’s just around the corner.
Camping and get-togethers are a tradition for many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians on the long holiday weekend. Haggie says the province did well with the Easter weekend, but it took us two weeks to know that.
Now with some changes to public health orders in place and the May 24th weekend coming, Haggie is a little worried.
He says it’s the “getting together” part that will be problematic with the virus, as it only moves when we do, and spreads when we are with each other. He says we won’t know how well we’ve done with the long weekend until early June.
Province Working on Promotion of “Staycations”
Premier Dwight Ball says the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation is developing a program to promote the idea of “staycations” this summer.
With the travel ban in place for the foreseeable future, there will be no tourists from out-of-province entering this summer.
Premier Ball says they need to work with Dr. Fitzgerald and Public Health Officials to make sure they can do that safely.
Ball says if we follow the rules, we get to Alert Level Three and beyond. It is only then they are able to make the safe decision on travel within Newfoundland and Labrador.
Ball believes vacationing in the province is good for mental and physical health, but they must make sure measures are in place so people can do that safely.
